Media figures falsely assert or suggest autoworkers make $70/hour without noting figure includes benefits paid to current retirees

Several media outlets have used data that combines the average cost of current wages and benefits and future benefits to falsely assert or suggest that autoworkers make $70 or more per hour. But, as analysts and some media outlets have noted, the figure includes not only future retirement benefits for current workers, but also benefits paid to current retirees.

For second day in a row, NY Times falsely suggested Bill Clinton refuses to disclose source of speaking fees

In an article about whether Sen. Hillary Clinton would accept the position of secretary of state in an Obama administration, The New York Times reported that aides to President-elect Barack Obama "have been reviewing Mr. [Bill] Clinton's business dealings, focusing on the array of his post-presidential activities, some details of which have not been made public. That includes the identity of most of the donors to his foundation" and "the source of some of his speaking fees." But the Times did not note that the source and amount of all of Bill Clinton's speaking fees of $200 or more are disclosed annually in Hillary Clinton's Senate disclosure forms.

NY Times misled on disclosure of Bill Clinton's speaking fees

The New York Times reported that in considering whether to nominate Sen. Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, "[t]he Obama transition team is focused on the wide array of Mr. Clinton's postpresidential activities, some details of which have not been made public. This list includes the identity of most of the donors to his foundation, the source of some of his speaking fees -- he has earned as much as $425,000 for a one-hour speech." But the Times did not note that the source and amount of all of Bill Clinton's speaking fees of $200 or more are disclosed annually in Hillary Clinton's Senate disclosure forms.

NY Times reports GOP "strongly questioning" MN Sec. of State Ritchie's "objectivity" -- but not GOP praise of his bipartisan canvassing board appointments

The New York Times reported that Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, "who is in charge of the recount" in the Minnesota Senate race between Republican Sen. Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken, "lamented the campaigns' 'hand grenades at each other,' " adding: "But as a well-known Democrat, he has not eluded those grenades, with Republicans strongly questioning his objectivity." But the Times did not note that Minnesota Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty said that the canvassing board Ritchie named to certify the vote overseeing the recount was "fair" and that a lawyer for Coleman's campaign also reportedly said that the "state should feel good about who's on the panel."
Media conservatives claim America is "center-right," but political scientists challenge reliance on voter self-identification

Several conservative commentators claim America is ideologically a "center-right" country, citing as evidence general election exit polls showing that 22 percent of respondents identify themselves as "liberal," 44 percent as "moderate" and 34 percent as "conservative." But political scientists dispute the reliability of voters' identification with political ideologies, and other polling has found that a strong majority favored the more progressive position on a number of issues.

NY Times latest outlet to repeat McCain campaign misinformation about impact of Obama's tax plan on small businesses

The New York Times quoted McCain spokesman Jeff Sadosky saying: "Barack Obama's plans to raise taxes on small businesses and his attacks on Midwestern family farmers have turned off rural voters." But the Times did not point out that less than 2 percent of taxpayers declaring small business income would see a tax increase in 2009 under Obama's plan, according to estimates by the Tax Policy Center.

Wash. Times reported on Obama's "association" with Khalidi, but not McCain's

A Washington Times article stated that Sen. John McCain "drew fresh attention this week to Mr. [Barack] Obama's friendship with Rashid Khalidi" regarding "a 2003 party in Chicago honoring Mr. Khalidi where Mr. Obama gives a speech." But it did not note McCain's own reported "connection to Khalidi": His role as chairman of an organization that awarded a $448,873 grant to an organization Khalidi co-founded.

Ignoring contrary evidence, NY Times, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette uncritically repeated McCain accusation that Obama is "delay[ing] the World Series"

The New York Times and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette uncritically reported Sen. John McCain's suggestion that Sen. Barack Obama is "delay[ing] the World Series" with his purchase of 30 minutes of network airtime to be broadcast October 29. Neither article noted that, according to the Fox executive who reportedly negotiated the ad buy, Obama's purchase of the airtime would not delay the start of the game.

NY Times, AP again ignored their own reporting on McCain campaign's claims about Obama's association with Ayers

The New York Times and the AP uncritically reported the McCain campaign's claims about Sen. Barack Obama's association with William Ayers, with a post on the Times' The Caucus blog quoting Sen. John McCain's claim that Obama "was friends with a terrorist and his wife," and the AP reporting that Gov. Sarah Palin "reaffirmed her view that Obama had been 'palling around with terrorists' because of his association with Bill Ayers." Neither news outlet noted its earlier reporting undermining these claims.

Ignoring its own reporting, NY Times omitted key facts on ACORN voter registration allegations

The New York Times quoted Sen. John McCain's assertion during the third presidential debate that ACORN was "on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country," but ignored key facts, including that the statutes of most of the states in which ACORN allegedly submitted false or duplicate voter registration applications this year require third parties registering prospective voters to submit all forms they receive, or that actual instances of illegal votes being cast as a result of registration fraud are extremely rare.

Ignoring its own reporting, NY Times did not point out falsehoods in Corsi's smear books on Obama, Kerry

The New York Times asserted that Jerome Corsi's recent book smearing Sen. Barack Obama "raises pointed questions about Mr. Obama's history of drug use, his 'extensive connections' to Islam and his relationships with Kenyan politicians, among other things -- allegations that Mr. Obama's campaign and others have widely disputed." However, the Times did not point out that The Obama Nation contains numerous falsehoods that have been widely discredited and denounced by the media.
